What would be a good engine for ss monte carlo 87?

i got a monte carlo ss .i want to change the engine 1 would be a engine that would waste less Gas but good horse Power.i know they will all waste gas but out of all of them the engines that i could fit in a ss monte carlo which would be the one and from what car and year.thxx for the help.
