Compressor clutch slipping alot?

1985 chevy monte carlo with engine running.. a/c on max. the clutch on the compresor doesnt engage.it will engage for a few seconds if i tap it with something...i can rebuild it.if thats what it needs or is there a adjustment i can do? thanks to all
